A must for a classic French crème brûlée, these oven-proof baking dishes (or ramekins) are robustly made to heat evenly and provide a classic presentation of this traditional dessert.
Crème brûlée is known for its rich, creamy custard base topped with a contrasting layer of hard caramelized sugar. The name translates to "burnt cream," referring to the sugar that is caramelized using a blowtorch or broiler to create a delicate, crispy layer.
Typically made with heavy cream, egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla, crème brûlée is baked in individual ramekins. The custard is cooked gently in a water bath to ensure a smooth, velvety texture. Once cooled and set, a thin layer of sugar is sprinkled on top, which is then caramelized until it forms a brittle crust, providing a satisfying textural contrast to the creamy custard beneath.
