These fun and whimsical bistro-style fondue plates were irresistible at a recent flea market. With hand painted trim, they are 24 cm in diameter and have recessed areas for all the extras and condiments needed for a classic fondue party or gathering. Made by Gien, they are stamped on the underside with the brand and ‘hand painted’.
The tradition of French fondue, particularly the variety known as "fondue Savoyarde," has its roots in the Alpine regions of France, specifically Savoy. This communal dish, dating back to the 18th century, embodies the spirit of gathering and sharing among friends and family.
A classic fondue Savoyarde combines three types of cheese: Gruyère, Emmental, and a touch of the more potent Comté, all melted together with white wine and a hint of garlic. The cheese is carefully heated in a traditional fondue pot, or "caquelon," over an open flame or a small burner, creating a lively, interactive dining experience. The dish is accompanied by bite-sized pieces of crusty bread, which diners skewer with long forks to immerse into the luscious, gooey cheese.
