How to make the perfect vinaigrette?
Classic French Vinaigrette
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar (or your preferred vinegar)
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Optional: herbs or additional flavorings (e.g., minced shallots, garlic, or honey)
Instructions:
Combine the Base Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the Dijon mustard and vinegar until smooth. This combination provides the tangy base for your vinaigrette.
Emulsify the Mixture: Slowly drizzle the extra virgin olive oil while continuously whisking the mixture. This process creates an emulsion, ensuring that the oil and vinegar blend together seamlessly.
Season: Once the oil is fully incorporated, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning according to your preference.
Enhance the Flavor (Optional): If desired, mix in minced shallots for a mild onion flavor, a clove of minced garlic for a hint of boldness, or a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. Whisk these additional ingredients into your vinaigrette.
Taste and Adjust: Taste your vinaigrette and adjust the balance of vinegar, oil, and seasoning as needed. The ideal vinaigrette should be well-balanced, with acidity complementing the richness of the oil.
Serve or Store: Use immediately over your favorite salads or vegetables. If you wish to store it, transfer the vinaigrette to a jar, seal tightly, and refrigerate. Shake well before using, as separation may occur.
This classic vinaigrette is versatile and can elevate any salad, bringing a touch of French sophistication to your culinary creations. Enjoy!
