Antique Blown Glass Fly Catcher

Antique Blown Glass Fly Catcher

$95.00

Artisan made, 19th century antique insect catcher in beautiful lilac glass. Antique glass fly catchers are charming historical pieces, valued for their utility and aesthetic appeal. Emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these artisan made glass items offered an elegant solution to a common household problem.

Dimensions: 22 cm tall - 14 cm in diameter.

Typically shaped like vases or jars with a broad base and narrow neck, they use liquid bait (sugar syrup or vinegar) to attract flies, trapping them inside. The lilac hue, which ranges from soft lavender to deeper violet tones, is a result of the combination of various minerals and compounds used in the glass-making process, often incorporating manganese to achieve its signature tint.

Blown glass, known for its lightweight and delicate appearance, emerged during the Renaissance, with significant developments in glass-making techniques originating in places such as Italy, Bohemia, and later, France.
