Antique French Pewter Tureen with Pumpkin Finial
A beautiful old French pewter tureen with a wide covered bowl, simple loop handles and the most charming little pumpkin and leaf finial on the lid. The naturally aged pewter has developed wonderful variation in color and patina, while the unusual pumpkin detail gives an otherwise traditional serving piece a little personality.
Beautiful on a table or sideboard, and especially good for an autumn table filled with seasonal fruit, nuts or simply displayed on its own.
Dimensions: 18 cm diameter bowl, 25 cm across from handle to handle
Material: Pewter - stamped etain (tin) 97% / 2.5% antinomy and 0.5% cuivre (copper)
Dating & attribution: France, 18th - 19th century. The underside bears an ÉTAIN punch together with a circular maker or production mark that has and angel in the center with the metal values surrounding the rim, but has not been positively identified a maker. Age is assessed through the form, construction, materials, workmanship, decorative style and natural signs of age and use. The tureen shows the surface variation, small marks and mellow patina expected from old pewter.
Notes: Often pieces like these were made my metal workers from original examples in silver to make them more widely available when silver and silver plating was too expensive. These pieces were often one-of-a-kind replicas and still reserved for elegant country homes and estates and makes them a rare find in today’s collectors market.

As with all vintage and antique items, please look closely at the details in the images. We note breakage or chips if apparent, but the patina which is inherent of age, or wear from 50-100+ years of existence and use -- is assumed for older pieces and is not considered a flaw or defect.
