Antique French Copper Scale Plate – Paris, Late 1800s

Antique French Copper Scale Plate – Paris, Late 1800s

$280.00

I love when something that has used previously for a specific function finds a new function. This solid copper plate began life hanging from a scale or suspended balance in a culinary shop — you can still see the three small holes around the rim where its chains were attached. Today, it makes a beautiful serving or display piece, and at 24 cm it is just the right size for fruit on the kitchen counter.

  • Dimensions: approx. 24 cm diameter

  • Origin: France; solid copper, stamped “En Chemin Paris” in the center; three original suspension holes remain from its use as a scale plate

  • Dating & attribution: late 1800s. Dating is approximate and based on its construction, scale-pan form, markings, hand-worked surface and patina.

Why we love this…

With the exceptional ability to conduct heat efficiently, copper cookware promotes precision and excellence in cooking. Traditional tin lined interiors are virtually non-stick when used correctly. Cooking with copper is the best option for everything from sauces to slowly cooked stews, braising and oven gratins. It is unbeatable for confiture and pastry making.
